At Daffodil WLC, we are dedicated to creating a secure, nurturing, and inclusive setting where every child can flourish and achieve their potential. Our ethos revolves around a child-centred methodology, recognising and honouring the unique requirements, capabilities, and backgrounds of each child under our care. We believe all children have the right to Welsh language care.
Our approach aligns with the legal requirements outlined by the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018, demonstrating our dedication to promoting Welsh language education and inclusivity within our childcare setting. We also understand the significance of Regulation 24, which highlights the importance of addressing the health needs of children, and Standard 4, of the National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for children up to the age of 12 years, which emphasises the necessity of catering to each child's individual needs, including any special educational requirements and disabilities.
Qualifications and Training
Drawing from extensive qualifications and training, including a Level 4 Certificate Higher Level Teaching Assistant and Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs, we ensure that our practice is informed by best practices and current regulations. Additionally, we regularly attend training in areas such as mental health awareness, safeguarding, and paediatric first aid equips us with the necessary skills to meet the diverse needs of the children in our care.
Promoting Inclusion
We promote inclusion by embracing diversity and celebrating the unique qualities of each child. Using a child-centred approach, we tailor our provision to meet the individual needs of every child, including those with additional learning needs or disabilities. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, we aim to empower children to develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
Consultation and Communication
We actively engage with parents/carers to ensure that their needs and preferences are understood and integrated into the care provided for their child. From initial consultations before a child starts, to ongoing communication and collaboration, we work closely with parents/carers to facilitate a smooth transition into our setting and to address any concerns or requirements they may have. Before a child starts with us, we provide an 'about me' profile for parents to fill, facilitating early understanding and planning. Additionally, we offer settling-in sessions to help children transition smoothly into our care.
Identifying Additional Learning Needs
We are vigilant in identifying children who may require additional support or have additional learning needs. We employ a variety of assessment methods and observational techniques to identify children with additional learning needs. Through regular developmental assessments, behavioural observations, educational evaluations, communication assessments, and collaboration with specialists, we strive to gain a comprehensive understanding of each child's unique learning profile.
Partnership Working and Access to Resources
At Daffodil, we place a strong emphasis on partnership working to support children with additional learning needs (ALN). We believe that collaboration with children, parents, other agencies, and professionals is essential to providing holistic support and ensuring that every child can access facilities, equipment, activities, and play opportunities tailored to their individual needs. By working closely with all stakeholders, we create an inclusive environment where children with ALN can thrive and reach their full potential.
Accessibility is paramount in our childcare setting. We are committed to ensuring that all children, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate in our programs. We adapt the physical environment as far as is reasonable to accommodate the needs of children with ALN, adjusting facilities and resources to enhance accessibility and promote inclusivity.
In collaboration with the local authority, we follow established procedures for identifying and supporting children with ALN in Monmouthshire. We work closely with the Early Years Additional Learning Needs Lead Officer to access guidance, resources, and support services available in the local area. This collaboration allows us to share information effectively and coordinate efforts to ensure that children receive the appropriate support and interventions they need to thrive in our childcare setting.
Additionally, we uphold the privacy of all children during intimate care provision, respecting their dignity and promoting a safe and comfortable environment for all. Through these initiatives, we demonstrate our commitment to providing high-quality, inclusive childcare services that meet the diverse needs of children in our care.
