At Daffodil WLC, Our Nappy Changing and Potty-Training Policy underscores our commitment to cleanliness, safety, and collaborative partnership with parents, in line with Standard 10 of the Childminding and Daycare (Wales) Regulations 2010 and National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for children up to the age of 12.
Our team possesses a Level 2 certification in: Sound knowledge, Understanding and Application of infection prevention and control, demonstrating a thorough understanding and application of infection prevention and control principles.
Collaboration with Parents:
We deeply value the importance of working closely with parents to understand and cater to the unique needs of each child in our care. At Daffodil WLC, we uphold principles of respect, privacy, and dignity, particularly when supporting older children and those with additional learning needs.
Upon observing signs indicating your child's readiness for potty or toilet training, we promptly arrange a convenient time to discuss your plans and preferences for their training journey. We recognise that readiness for potty training varies among children, typically emerging around their second birthday, though some children may show readiness later. We advocate for a collaborative approach between parents and caregivers, ensuring that training efforts commence at an appropriate time and are pursued with mutual dedication. Should we initiate training and find that your child is not yet prepared, we remain flexible, willing to pause and resume the process at a later stage.
Throughout the training process, we remain committed to providing daily feedback on your child's progress, fostering transparency and collaboration between our team and parents, and ensuring everyone is well-informed and actively involved in the child's developmental journey.
Promotion of Good Health and Hygiene:
At Daffodil WLC, we are dedicated to maintaining high health standards by ensuring clean and hygienic facilities, including toilets, equipment, and designated nappy changing areas. Our practices strictly adhere to infection prevention and control guidelines for childcare settings, ensuring a safe environment for all children in our care.
To promote proper handwashing techniques, we engage both staff and children through interactive methods such as handwashing songs and visual aids, making learning enjoyable and encouraging consistent adherence to hygienic practices.
To ensure the comfort and hygiene of the children under our care, we kindly request that parents provide necessary items such as nappies, creams, and baby wipes. In return, we provide clean changing mats, meticulously sanitized between each use, and nappy sacks for the hygienic disposal of used nappies. Additionally, our staff always wear plastic gloves during nappy changes to maintain cleanliness and reduce the risk of contamination, further safeguarding the well-being of the children in our care.
Procedure for Changing Nappies
Our nappy changing procedure includes wearing protective clothing such as reusable fabric aprons which will be washed immediately if dirty and single use gloves. Changes are tailored to each child's needs, avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach. We maintain safe equipment storage, hygienic disposal of soiled items, and thorough cleaning to prevent cross-contamination and uphold infection control.
Supply of Nappies and Related Items
At Daffodil WLC, we operate under the understanding that parents are responsible for providing essential items to ensure their child's comfort and hygiene. We kindly request that parents supply a full pack of nappies, nappy bags, two packets of wipes, and any creams or ointments at their discretion.
It's important to note that we ensure creams are individually labelled with the child's name, adhering to infection prevention guidance. Additionally, we conduct daily stock checks to monitor the availability of these items. Parents will be promptly notified when their child has five remaining nappies and only one pack of wet wipes on-site, allowing them ample time to provide replacements.
In cases of emergency where essential items are unavailable, we maintain a stock of emergency nappies available for purchase at £1 per nappy. This measure ensures that the needs of the child are promptly addressed while also providing a convenient solution for parents.
Safeguarding Measures
We implement strict safeguarding procedures during nappy changes, including keeping doors open/unlocked and prohibiting the use of cameras or mobile phones in the changing area. Assistants are supervised and trained in these procedures.
Supervision of Children and Feedback to Parents
During nappy changes, we ensure the safety of other children through appropriate supervision methods such as placing babies in buggies or playpens. Daily feedback to parents regarding nappy changes and toileting is provided, fostering transparency and trust.
Positive Interaction and Engagement and further support for potty and toilet training
At Daffodil, we are dedicated to ensuring that the nappy changing, and toilet training experiences are positive and empowering for every child in our care. We recognise that these moments present valuable opportunities for interaction and communication with your child, and as such, we actively engage with them during nappy changes.
Moreover, we provide a range of resources and equipment to support your child's independence in using the toilet, including potties, toilet trainer seats, steps for accessing the toilet and wash basin, colouring sheets, wetting dolls, and educational materials such as books and videos on potty training. These resources are carefully selected to encourage independence and confidence in your child's toilet training journey.
During these activities, we incorporate interactive elements such as singing, playing, and encouragement to create a positive and supportive atmosphere. Our goal is to foster an environment where children feel empowered to embrace this developmental milestone with confidence. We believe that by providing a nurturing and encouraging environment, we can help your child build essential skills and confidence as they progress through their toilet training journey.
Wiping and Intimate Care
We encourage children to independently wipe themselves properly after urination and defecation, while helping as needed. This practice fosters personal hygiene and contributes to preventing the spread of germs.
Additionally, for children of menstrual age, we discreetly provide feminine hygiene products. Sanitary bins are readily accessible to promote privacy and hygiene, ensuring the comfort and dignity of every child.
By adhering to these policies and procedures, we ensure the holistic well-being and development of every child entrusted to Daffodil WLC.
